Urgent Request for Housing Assistance to Prevent My Family From Becoming Homeless

MICHIGAN / Posted 4 weeks ago by 174536

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing because my family is in an emergency situation, and I am urgently asking for help to prevent us from becoming homeless. I have lived in my current home for 16 years. After the original owner passed away in 2022, the property changed hands quickly. The new owner struggled with extensive repair costs—including a collapsed roof and a failed central air system requiring over $5,000 in repairs—and ongoing conflicts with the housing authority tied to the previous owner. Feeling overwhelmed and fearful about potential cuts to housing support programs, he decided to sell the home.

The property was listed for sale in early October and sold within two weeks. The buyer made a cash offer on the condition that I vacate the home by December 10, 2025, leaving my family with almost no transition time.

During this same period, my oldest son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and is also on the autism spectrum. We spent five days in the hospital at the end of October, and his care requires constant monitoring. I am his primary caregiver. Along with managing this crisis, I have been packing our belongings into storage, searching for affordable housing, and struggling to coordinate with my Section 8 caseworker. Despite applying to more than 50 rentals, I have been unable to secure a home—even with a strong rental history, a credit score above 650, and a valid Housing Choice Voucher.

My attempts to work with other housing authorities have been complicated by slow responses and miscommunication from my assigned worker, which has caused me to lose multiple housing opportunities. With the deadline approaching, I am terrified that my three children and I will be left without a place to live.

I am also in the final course of my Bachelor of Business Administration program, and the stress has made it almost impossible to focus on school or my children’s medical needs. My own health is deteriorating—I have high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and trigeminal neuralgia—but I am afraid to seek medical care because I fear being admitted and losing everything while I am hospitalized.

I am doing everything I can, but I cannot secure stable housing on my own. My children’s safety and well-being depend on us finding a home quickly. I am urgently requesting assistance with any of the following:

Emergency housing placement

Support transferring or processing my Section 8 voucher

Help locating landlords who accept Housing Choice Vouchers

Advocacy, case management, or legal support

Any resources that can prevent my family from becoming homeless

I want nothing more than to provide a safe and stable home for my children so we can focus on their medical needs—and mine—and move forward without fear. With the holiday season approaching, this situation has overwhelmed us, and I have been unable to sleep or eat from the constant worry.

Please, any help you can provide will make a life-changing difference for my family.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any assistance you can offer.

Sincerely,
Desiray Dial
